Change in response to the historic environment is addressed through historic preservation. Historic preservation has become increasingly important in the design, adaptive use, planning, and management of buildings, cities, and regions as society recognizes the historical and cultural value of the inherited environment and what has been lost through the destruction of buildings, landscapes, and communities. Understanding the temporal dimension in human culture defines history as an integral component of the continual change that is accountable for our environment's material, psychological, and symbolic features.
